Chapter 16 - Dax

Dax took Ridley’s hand in his as they left the Summer Ball. After the heat and noise of the crowded dance floor, the quiet night air and cool breeze were a balm to the soul. They ran down the steps with their hands intertwined, giddy with excitement after a night of champagne and dancing.

“That was wonderful,” Ridley cried, her cheeks flushed.

“Not as wonderful as you,” Dax said.

She skipped ahead, the picture of joy. He followed her to his parked car, the sleek black sedan gleaming in the light of the flickering torches that lined the area.

As they approached the car, Dax opened the door for her and helped her inside. He took his place behind the wheel and started the engine. It took a few minutes to maneuver the car out of the busy parking lot, but soon, they were on their way home.

The streets were quiet and empty, the only sounds coming from the occasional car passing by. Ridley leaned her head against the window and sighed contentedly, a smile on her lips.

Dax studied her from the corner of his eyes. He had to admit she was an attractive girl. Intelligent, fun, bright, and courageous. A bit young and naive when it came to people but strong and brave when it mattered. It was too bad. If things were different… but they weren’t. He had his orders, and he’d do what needed to be done.

Mustering a warm smile, he asked, “Did you have fun tonight?”

Ridley turned to face him, her eyes sparkling in the dim light of the car. “Yes, I did. Thank you so much for taking me to the ball. And for the lovely dress.”

Dax’s smile widened. “It was my pleasure. What man wouldn’t want to go with the most beautiful woman in the world on his arm?”

Ridley blushed and looked down at her lap. “Thank you.”

Dax mentally gave himself a pat on the back. The night had gone exactly as planned. He had Ridley eating out of the palm of his hand. All he had to do now was reel her in. Tomorrow. Tomorrow, we set the plan in motion.

The miles passed quickly, and they reached the boarding house within minutes. He parked the car at the bottom of the steps and killed the engine. Silence fell over the cab, the atmosphere heavy with anticipation. Ridley fidgeted with her dress, clearly unsure what to do.

“Would you like me to walk you to your room?” Dax asked, breaking the stalemate.

Ridley hesitated for a moment before nodding. “I would like that.”

Dax got out of the car and opened Ridley’s door. She stepped out, and he took her hand. Together, they walked up the stairs.

At the front door, Dax turned to face Ridley. “Goodnight, Ridley. Thank you for a wonderful evening.”

Ridley smiled, her eyes shining. “Thank you, Dax. I had a great time. I… um…I guess it’s goodnight.”

She turned to enter the building, but Dax reached out to stop her. “Wait.”

“Yes?” she asked, her face tilting toward his.
